London Marathon, Sawe breaks two-hour barrier; Kejelcha and Assefa also set records
Sabastian Sawe of Kenya became the first athlete to run a marathon under two hours, winning the 2026 London Marathon in 1:59:30 and breaking Kelvin Kiptum's previous world record of 2:00:35. Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha also ran under two hours, and Tigst Assefa set a new women's world record at 2:15:41 to retain her London title. Sawe's sub-two-hour milestone came on a world-record-eligible London course, resetting elite marathon standards and changing expectations for pacing, training and race strategy at the top level.
Kenyan runner Sabastian Sawe won the London Marathon in under 2 hours. 13 miles an hour sustained by no one else on Earth
The guy who came second was also sub 2 hours.
Actually, yes. Number 2 managed that as well.
The Ethiopian who finished second also broke the 2 hour mark.
Except for the guy 11 seconds behind him who finished second, also with a time under 2 hours. They both averaged a pace of 4:33 per mile.
2 men ran sub two-hour marathons. That’s 26.2 miles in UNDER 2 hours on foot. They ran slightly over 13 mph for nearly 2 hours straight. It comes out to 4:33/mile average. They ran each mile at 4 minutes and 33 seconds. Every. Single. Mile. For 26.2 miles.
That’s for *ONE* mile. ONE. One mile in 4:28 minutes in 1855 was the first recorded world record mile time. The two men who ran sub 2-hour marathons ran every single mile at or below 4:33 minutes per mile…for 26.2 miles. My brain cannot fathom going that fast on solid ground without wheels.
also with a new men's Boston record in there too not even a week ago!
